Nico Williams has reportedly agreed on personal terms with Barcelona on a six-year contract.
The Athletic Club star has committed to a deal that runs until June 2031, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting a net annual salary of €7–8 million.
While the financial agreement with Athletic is still pending, Barcelona appear confident of sealing the deal.
Williams has a release clause of around €62m, and discussions are ongoing to structure a deal that fits within Barcelona’s spending limits.
President Joan Laporta hinted at a major signing this week and appears to have been referring to Williams.
Speaking to the club’s Senate, Laporta claimed the club is ‘on the verge of making an imminent signing’ and said the new arrival would ‘excite us a lot’.
Williams fits that description perfectly, especially after his performances for Spain, where he and Lamine Yamal have combined to devastating effect.
Barcelona attempted to sign Williams last summer but failed to convince him to leave Bilbao. They turned to Dani Olmo instead, but the interest in Williams never went away.
The winger now seems more open to a switch, and the pieces may finally be falling into place.
The agreement arrives just a day after Barcelona completed a move for goalkeeper Joan Garcia, another player heavily linked with Arsenal.
Club executives, including sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick, have reportedly been in Ibiza finalising plans for the summer rebuild.
Signing Williams would be a major coup, but it could also create selection dilemmas.
Raphinha is coming off a prolific campaign with 31 goals and 17 assists, and Yamal is untouchable on the opposite flank.
The prospect of a Yamal and Williams tandem in Blaugrana colours is mouthwatering.
Barcelona’s ability to move for players this summer has been boosted by their compliance with La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule.
Laporta confirmed that the club’s finances are now strong enough to operate normally in the market, easing previous restrictions.
The deal is not yet complete, but if all goes according to plan, Williams could become Barcelona’s most exciting signing of the summer.
