La Liga clubs Atlético Madrid and Villarreal have this week agreed on the terms of a transfer for defender Santiago Mouriño.

That’s according to market insider Matteo Moretto, who has on Wednesday provided an insight into the details of the unusual operation.

Stopper Mouriño for his part departed Atlético Madrid on a permanent basis last summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal with Deportivo Alavés.

As part of the agreement struck between the sides, Atléti also secured a buyback clause on their outgoing centre-half.

And just 12 months on, the Rojiblancos are now primed to activate as much.

This, however, does not come with a view to Mouriño staying put in Diego Simeone’s squad for the season ahead.

Instead, as confirmed by the aforementioned Matteo Moretto, upon his return to Spain’s capital, the Uruguayan will be immediately sold on, on this occasion to Marcelino’s Villarreal:

‘Santiago Mouriño to Villarreal is verbally agreed, pending signatures. Five-year contract for the player. It is a direct transfer from Atlético de Madrid, which retains a % of the future sale.’
