Atletico Madrid star Griezmann extends contract until 2027 | OneFootball

French forward Antoine Griezmann has signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid until June 2027, confirmed by the club.

Griezmann was heavily linked with a move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC, but he has decided to continue with Los Rojiblancos on a reduced salary.

The 34-year-old is in the upper echelons of Atletico’s history, topping the all-time scorers list with 197 goals and ranking eighth for appearances (442).

The 2018 World Cup winner won the Europa League with Atletico in 2017/18 and was also part of the side that finished runners-up in the 2015/16 Champions League.

Since returning from his disappointing spell at Barcelona, Griezmann has regularly hit double figures for goals and assists each season.

However, he has experienced a slight dip in form this term, with Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth taking centre stage as the new leaders of Atletico’s attack.

Nevertheless, he has been of great importance to Diego Simeone’s side, bagging 16 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

Griezmann is unlikely to be a regular starter next season, although Simeone will consider him integral to his plans.

Atletico endured another lacklustre season, failing to win any silverware.

They are looking to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window in a bid to challenge for multiple trophies next season.

The Spanish giants have earmarked Villarreal’s Alex Baena, Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso and Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero as potential targets.

Atletico will lock horns with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in their opening game of the Club World Cup this month.
