Miguel Almiron is set to end his six-year stay at Newcastle United with a return to Atlanta United expected to be confirmed imminently. According to Fabrizio Romano, there’s an agreement between all parties for the Paraguayan attacker to return to his former side for a reported $12m (£9.6m).
The 30-year-old was a late substitute against Southampton on Saturday before seemingly saying his goodbye to the travelling away support after the final whistle. Although Eddie Howe stated that it was “not necessarily a goodbye”, Almiron is expected to finalise his return to MLS.
Almiron will reportedly sign a four-and-a-half year contract at Atlanta, where he played his football between 2016 and 2019 after joining from Argentine side Lanús. During his first spell in America, he played 70 games across all competitions – scoring 22 and creating 21 – before sealing £21m move to St. James’ Park.
During his time at Newcastle, Almiron became a likeable figure among the Geordie supporters. During his six-year spell, the Paraguay international played 223 games across all competitions, scoring 30 and creating 12.
