Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is doing an exceptional job in the Midlands. With a credible shot of winning silverware, it's clear that he knows how to push the right buttons and get the most out of this current group of players.
He understands, however, that the process needs to be right in order to consistently get results. Particularly with a ton of great options throughout the pitch, anyone who drops in effort levels or isn't up to par can be easily substituted with an equal-caliber player.
The ability to make changes and find different ways to win is another strong weapon of the Spanish coach. Just when someone feels that they could potentially have figured out his tactics, he has a good ability to show a different hand.
Moving forward, this AVFC side will be tested in a multitude of ways. Between the end of the English Premier League fixtures, Crystal Palace at Wembley, and PSG in Champions League, each matchup will offer a different look and obstacle. Emery will enjoy figuring out ways to gain an advantage and best position his men to finish the season on a strong note.
Playing with stakes in April and May is all that anyone can ask for. In the case of Villa, they are pushing for the domestic cup and looking to play spoilers in Europe. The chance to climb up in the standings is also strong. Particularly with how some teams looked before the international break, there could be just enough time to make up some lost ground from earlier dropped points.
The importance of participating in the competitions in these latter rounds is important to Emery. After defeating PNE, he spoke with the media about what advancing meant to him and for the club:
"FA Cup is very important. How we are facing this competition, getting out the semi-final. Of course, how important it is for the supporters. Keep calm, prepare the match on Wednesday against Brighton."
His message of keeping a cool head is most important. It is significant and important to recognize the progress that Villa is seeing under the Spaniard. At the same time, he knows that the focus has to be on a match-to-match basis. Getting excited over the possibilities, that's for fans, and supporters should be proud and eager to see a trophy added to the cabinet. For Emery and Aston Villa, the energy immediately shifts to the next opponent following a big game, even one as big as an FA Cup victory.
