Arsenal are interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan, reports the Guardian journalist Ed Aarons.

The Frenchman signed a new contract until 2027 last December, but it has not dissuaded the Gunners.

Simakan joined the Bundesliga club from Ligue 1 club Strasbourg in 2021 on a five-year deal.

The 23-year-old defender has impressed suitors with his performances since then, with Arsenal showing strong interest.

The north London club are challenging for the Premier League title and have already qualified for next season’s Champions League.

They need quality depth at the back to impress across all competitions next term.

Arsenal recently lost France international centre-back William Saliba to a long-term injury, and it affected their momentum.

Manchester City have since moved to the top of the table as a result, and manager Mikel Arteta wants to avoid a similar issue next term.

Simakan has featured in 33 games across all competitions this term, with three goals and four assists to his name.

He can also play at right-back, and Arteta could do with such a versatile defender.

However, he will not come cheap given his contract situation.

Arsenal can also expect fierce competition for his services as some other top clubs are also keeping tabs on him.

The Gunners want to establish themselves as a force to reckon with in England and on the continent, and they need to make quality additions this summer.
