Arsenal have confirmed they will lodge an appeal for Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card during their 1-0 win over Wolves.
During the closing stages of the first half, Lewis-Skelly caught Matt Doherty near the edge of the Wolves box and referee Michael Oliver decided to send off the 18-year-old for serious foul play. Oliver’s decision has led to significant backlash, as well as threats aimed at the official.
The defender is set to miss the Gunners’ next three matches, including their home game against Manchester City and the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United.
When asked whether the club would appeal in the immediate aftermath of the game, Arteta said: “That’s for the club to decide what is the best decision. It’s obvious that maybe we don’t even need to [put in an appeal].
“He’s really happy now that the team won and found a way to win it. He is very worried about what’s coming next because he’s strongly feeling that there was nothing to do with the action.”
“It is that clear and I will leave it to you guys,” Arteta told reporters regarding the original decision. “I am absolutely fuming. But I will leave it with you, it is that obvious that I don’t think my words are going to help.”
Arsenal won 1-0 thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s second-half winner – which came four minutes after Joao Gomes was given his marching orders for a second yellow, for a challenge that on Jurrien Timber that looked much worse than Lewis Skelly’s.
