Jamie Redknapp has labelled Arsenal youngster Max Dowman as “one of the best young players” he has ever seen in all his years of playing and analysing football.

15-year-old Dowman impressed during pre-season with the first team, and looks set for a role in Mikel Arteta’s squad this campaign.

The Gunners started their season with a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday and Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp believes they are well placed for another title push this season.

“It gives them a real chance,” he said when asked about the business the Gunners have done this summer by Hayters TV.

“Gyokeres is going to be good. I think Zubimendi is probably going to be as important because he’s that link in midfield. He’s such a brilliant young footballer, technically good, receives the ball in the half-turn.

“Every time he gets it, he wants to play forward and he’ll be a really nice for Declan Rice if you want to play with two defensive midfield players.

“I think they’ve also got one of the best young players I’ve ever seen in Max Dowman. I’ve seen him since he was seven years of age. He’s going to make an impact this year at 15 years of age. Make no mistake.

“And then you’re going to have players like Saka that are just incredible as well if they can keep him fit because don’t forget, he missed a large chunk of that season with a hamstring injury.

“So, Arsenal will go really close. They’re a good side. They just need a little bit of luck, things to go their way.”

Redknapp, however, is still tipping his former side for the Premier League crown after winning it last season and having started their new campaign with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

“I fancy Liverpool,” he said.

“And that’s not me wearing my Liverpool hat. I just think they’re still the team to beat.

“It’s going to be a tough season in terms of, obviously, what happened with Diogo Jota was just heartbreaking for everybody. So that emotion… and you have to take into account, for the players that were so close to him, that effect it has on them.”
