Arsenal’s long-standing pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi appears to be entering its decisive phase, with newly incoming sporting director Andrea Berta at the heart of final negotiations.
Although the Gunners have been laying the groundwork for over 18 months, there is a sense within the club that the operation is nearing completion. Internally, the move is described as “virtually done”. However, the spectre of Real Madrid remains. Their rumoured interest—amplified by recent coverage in the Spanish press—has not yet materialised into a formal bid, but Arsenal remain vigilant.
Andrea Berta, formerly of Atletico Madrid, is not yet officially installed but is understood to have started operating informally in his new capacity. His arrival marks a significant shift behind the scenes at the Emirates, and Zubimendi’s anticipated transfer is the first high-profile case where Berta’s involvement has been felt.
Berta previously attempted to lure Zubimendi to the Spanish capital while at Atletico in 2023. Now, he is leading Arsenal’s efforts to ensure the move is completed, working closely with Mikel Arteta and the club’s recruitment team.
Berta will take an increasingly prominent role in the Gunners’ summer recruitment strategy. Detailed planning discussions are already under way and will continue in the coming weeks, as the club seek to reinforce key areas of the squad. The groundwork, though, is already evident. “If Zubimendi is formally unveiled as a new Gunners player this summer as anticipated, Berta will likely receive notable praise for his impact but in truth, the hard yards on that specific deal were done many months ago towards the back end of 2024 by Arteta, Edu before his departure, Jason Ayto, James Ellis, Richard Garlick and Tim Lewis, respectively.”
One area where Arsenal may look to outmanoeuvre potential competitors is the payment structure. Zubimendi’s £51 million release clause presents a straightforward route, but sources indicate the Gunners are exploring a slightly higher total fee spread over a longer term to ease the strain under current Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
This type of financial planning is becoming more common in modern football and may give Arsenal a critical edge in sealing a deal without inviting a direct bidding war with Real Madrid.
Amid reports linking Berta to other high-profile midfielders, it’s understood that suggestions he will also push for Bruno Guimaraes are premature. While admiration for the Newcastle United star exists at the club, there is no immediate plan to make a formal approach. Arsenal remain focused on their current targets, and Zubimendi remains the priority.
Their interest in the Spain international dates back to last summer, shortly after Real Sociedad team-mate Mikel Merino was secured by another club. Quiet and discreet conversations around Zubimendi began at that point and have intensified over recent months, even before Berta’s involvement became public knowledge.
Despite Madrid’s lingering threat, confidence remains high that Arsenal will land their man. “Naturally, Arsenal are attentive to the situation but maintain confidence the defensive midfielder is heading to the Emirates Stadium this summer given the huge body of work that has already gone into the move.”
