Arsenal have moved to the top of the Premier League table after thrashing Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta’s side secured their second win in as many games with a comfortable victory over the promoted side. Arsenal laboured in the early stages, as the Gunners struggled to break down an organised Leeds side.

The breakthrough eventually arrived on 34 minutes and in familiar fashion, as Jurrien Timber nodded in from Declan Rice’s corner delivery.

With the deadlock broken, Arsenal grew in confidence and the lead was doubled before half-time. A neat move ended with Timber releasing Bukayo Saka, who thundered a right-foot finish high past Lucas Perri.

Arsenal needed just three minutes of the restart to extend their lead. Viktor Gyokeres scored his first goal for the Gunners after driving into the box and drilling in a low finish.

A fourth arrived before the hour, as Timber netted his second. Another set-piece fell to the Dutch defender – who had scored just once previously in the Premier League before Saturday – to steer home.

Dowman debuts as Arsenal thrash Leeds

Arteta made changes in the closing stages, including a debut for 15-year-old Max Dowman. The teenager became the second-youngest Premier League player of all time and only the third u-16 to play in the division.

Dowman showed glimpses of his rich potential with two efforts on goal as he looked to become the league’s youngest goalscorer. He then won a late penalty after a foul from Anton Stach, with Gyokeres blasting in his second.

A positive afternoon for Arsenal, that also saw new signing Eberechi Eze presented to the home crowd, was marred only by injuries to Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.

Each were forced off and the North Londoners will hope their issues are not serious. Arsenal face Premier League champions Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.
