Marc Brus of Caught Offside has reported that Arsenal want to buy a new striker in the summer transfer window and have targeted Mateo Retegui as the one to sign from Atalanta. The Serie A side will have to work hard to retain the striker amidst interests from a top Premier League side like the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta’s side had been looking for a striker in the earlier transfer windows as well. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus have not been that prolific in front of goal this season. Hence, Arteta is in need of a natural striker who can score consistent goals.

Retegui is the quintessential modern striker, blending physicality with finesse. He’s lethal inside the box, with exceptional timing and movement that create scoring opportunities from half-chances. His ability to score with both feet and his head makes him unpredictable.

The Argentina born forward excels in aerial duels, yet he’s not just a target man; he’s also adept at dropping deep to link play. His work rate is commendable, pressing from the front and contributing defensively, making him a well-rounded forward. Therefore, the Gunners want to sign him in the summer.

Retegui has scored 20 goals in 23 matches so far in the Serie A 2024/2025 season. Overall, his goals scored per 90 minutes is 1.3. Moreover, Retegui’s total G/A (goals + assists) is 23 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 1.5 per 90 minutes. His non-penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.99. These statistics clearly show that the Atlanta man has been in great form this season.

The Gunners might buy this in-form striker for €60 million. Hence, he will definitely be much cheaper than the other strikers that the club are linked to. So, the Gunners should definitely make a move for Retegui. However, it also remains to be seen if the Serie A side lets their star striker leave in the summer transfer window.
