Arsenal could sign a marquee striker before the transfer window closes, according to Corriere dello Sport (August 21 – page 6).

The Gunners have only signed defender Riccardo Calafiori this summer. The club are interested in landing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino and talks are ongoing over the final fee.

Arsenal are reportedly ‘back on the trail’ for Victor Osimhen and could make a late swoop for his signature before the transfer deadline on August 30.

Napoli were reluctant to accept less than the €130 million (£111m) release clause earlier this summer but could now be willing to sanction his departure for around €100m (£85m).

Arsenal could make a big statement with Osimhen deal

The Gunners had a fine start to the season with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Kai Havertz started up front and he was impressive with a goal and an assist.

Despite this, Arsenal’s hierarchy may want a better solution in the final third. Havertz tends to miss clear-cut chances which could prove costly in the title pursuit.

With this in mind, the club could be eyeing a late swoop for Osimhen, who has bagged 76 goals and 18 assists from 133 appearances since his move to Napoli.

The Nigerian star, who was described as ‘world-class‘ by Jose Mourinho last season, has a knack for scoring important goals.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres is another option on the club’s radar, but they may want his entire £85m release clause paid up front.

This may be why Arsenal could choose Osimhen over Gyokeres. Napoli have been determined to sell him for a while and are likely to accept payments over several seasons.
