Gabriel Heinze has joined Arsenal’s first-team coaching staff, replacing Carlos Cuesta following the Spaniard’s move to take charge of Parma.

This will be Heinze’s first coaching role in Europe after spells in Argentina and the United States.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time. He was spotted in London back in April 2024, with ESPN reporting at the time that he was in talks over a possible move. According to Fabrizio Romano, Heinze has close ties with members of Mikel Arteta’s backroom team, which helped ease his appointment.

Arsenal confirmed the move this week, saying they were pleased to welcome Heinze and his family to the club. He will now work alongside Albert Stuivenberg, Nicolas Jover and Inaki Cana.

Heinze, 47, won 71 caps for Argentina during his playing career and featured at two World Cups. He played over 400 games at club level, turning out for sides including PSG, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Marseille, and AS Roma.

He began coaching in 2015 and has taken charge of five clubs so far, most notably Argentinos Juniors, who he guided to promotion, and Atlanta United in MLS.

Heinze now takes on a key role in helping Arteta’s side build on their recent progress as they aim to compete for major trophies again this season.
