The Football Association has brought charges against Liverpool, Everton, and Reds manager Arne Slot following the turbulent aftermath of Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. The intense clash ended in a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser, but the chaos didn’t stop there.
Both Liverpool and Everton are accused of failing to ensure their players “did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way” after the final whistle. The emotional nature of the derby boiled over as tempers flared on the pitch.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has also been charged with acting “in an improper manner and/or using insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour” towards referee Michael Oliver and one of his assistants. Slot’s assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, faces similar allegations for his conduct before and after receiving his red card.
The FA has given the clubs, Slot, and Hulshoff until Wednesday, 19 February, to respond to the charges.
The flashpoint came when Everton’s James Tarkowski scored a last-minute equaliser, awarded after a VAR review. Liverpool players vehemently argued that the goal should have been disallowed, citing a push by Everton striker Beto on Reds defender Ibrahima Konate.
As the final whistle blew, Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans, prompting Curtis Jones to confront him. Both players were subsequently shown second yellow cards and dismissed.
Slot and Hulshoff also saw red as they approached Oliver to voice their frustrations about the officiating.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Slot admitted: “Emotions got the better of me” and acknowledged he should have “acted differently” in the heat of the moment.
The 2-2 draw leaves Liverpool seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, while Everton moved up to 15th, now 10 points above the relegation zone.
Despite the red card, Slot is expected to be present on the touchline for Liverpool’s next match against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.
A Premier League website error initially reported a two-match ban for Slot due to offensive language, but this was later removed, with officials attributing it to human error.
Liverpool fans will be watching closely as the club and its management respond to the FA charges. The Merseyside derby has always been a passionate affair, but this latest encounter has added an extra layer of drama to an already intense rivalry.
