He subsequently flopped badly at Aston Villa, before heading to the Middle East to pad out his bank balance in the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Ettifaq quickly discovered that being a ‘big-name player’ does not necessarily translate into ‘top-class manager’.

Having finished a long way behind Celtic in this season’s title race, the last thing Rangers need is Gerrard in the Ibrox hot seat.

Davide Ancelotti is undoubtedly a more viable option than Gerrard. He has spent the past few years learning his craft as part of his father’s backroom staff.

With Carlo Ancelotti set to take over as Brazil’s national team manager, the time is right for his son to branch out on his own.

Ancelotti Jr has built up a wealth of knowledge during spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

He is the type of forward-thinking appointment that Rangers need to make if they are to have any chance of knocking Celtic off their perch in Scotland.

Gerrard is a busted flush as a manager. Any club which appoints him favours ‘name’ over ability.
