On-loan Manchester United winger Antony has revealed how bad the situation became for him at the club before he decided to make the move to Spain.
The Brazilian moved to Real Betis on loan in January and has been performing at his very best, registering nine goals and five assists, his best return in a campaign since he was at Ajax.
Speaking in an interview, Antony admitted that at his lowest at United he was unable to even eat. “I didn’t feel that desire to play football,” he told TNT Sports Brasil. “I needed to find myself and be happy again because playing football was always something I loved. I went through difficult times when I no longer felt that pleasure. I even always told my brother, I told him that I couldn’t take it anymore.
“They were very hard days for me. Only I know what it was like to be there at home, not having the strength to even play with my son, going days without eating, staying locked in my room.
“So, for me it was very complicated, but thank God, with the help of my family and mainly with the help of God, I managed to get ahead and today I am very happy here.”
Antony’s return to form is good news not only for his current club but also for United, who could look to cash in during the summer.
Having not started a league game for first Erik ten Hag then Ruben Amorim’s side in the first half of the season, it may have seemed an impossible task to try and get him off the books, but with his scintillating form since making the move to Spain, he now has multiple suitors, with Atletico Madrid and Juventus thought to be interested.
The 25-year-old has been a hugely important factor in Manuel Pellegrini’s side reaching the UEFA Conference League final, where they will face Chelsea on Wednesday.
Unsurprisingly, Real Betis also want to keep the player. The Red Devils may have to take a significant loss on the £82 million they paid for him, but any money they make back will help them rebuild their squad, with a huge overhaul needed this summer.
