Only at Newcastle United…

The Newcastle team v Chelsea announced today at 12.45pm and no Anthony Gordon, not even on the bench.

Eddie Howe has now explained why, to Sky Sports:

“He just felt his groin yesterday in training.

“He travelled with us with the hope that he would make the game but he hasn’t.

“It is an undoubted blow for us because he has got pace and is an outstanding player.

“But Harvey Barnes comes in and has been excellent this season and I still like the team we have.”

This very much feels like it couldn’t have happened at a worse time, these seven days seeing the two matches away and home against Chelsea and then Arsenal at St James’ Park.

The one positive is that the fact that Anthony Gordon still travelled and what Eddie Howe has had to say, this hopefully suggests simply a precaution and fingers crossed no lengthy absence. It would obviously be great if Gordon was back as early as Wednesday but for me, I’d happily take a guarantee he would be back for Arsenal next weekend.
