Anderlecht chief explains overlooking Manchester United midfielder

There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of Christian Eriksen during the summer, but the Danish veteran remained at Manchester United and has started the last two matches in midfield.

Eriksen had a huge impact in his debut season at Old Trafford, but last season he struggled. This season he will be expected to provide cover in midfield while given a starting berth in cup competitions, such as the 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

The Denmark international was linked with a move away during the summer. Not just Belgian outfit Anderlecht, but a return to Ajax was tipped by multiple outlets.

A move never materialised.

Anderlecht chief Jesper Fredberg has explained that a move for Eriksen wasn’t ‘feasible’.

Speaking to Voetbal Nieuws, Fredberg said: “We brought in Leander Dendoncker, in a position where real competition was needed. That’s why we didn’t need another experienced player in midfield, although Eriksen was an absolute opportunity, which turned out not to be feasible.”

Eriksen recently admitted that he would have been open to leaving United if the club had told him there were no prospects for him at the club. But that wasn’t the case so he stayed.

“If they told me to leave, I would leave, but I didn’t hear that,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “There’s one year left [on my contract] so my focus is going to be on this year, going full-out and see what happens afterwards.”
