It has been a tricky summer for Atalanta, mainly because they have lost Gian Piero Gasperini, who was responsible for their success over the last decade, to direct competitors Roma. As a replacement, they have brought in Ivan Juric, who has massive shoes to fill. Their transfer business leaves some to be desired. Major incomings– Odilon Kossounou, Centre-Back, From Bayer Leverkusen, €20m– Honest Ahanor, Left-Back, From Genoa, €17m– Kamaldeen Sulemana, Left Winger, From Southampton, €17m– Lazar Samardžić, Attacking Midfield, From Udinese, €14.8m– Marco Brescianini, Central Midfield, From Frosinone, €10m– Marco Sportiello, Goalkeeper, From AC Milan, €1mMajor Outgoings:– Mateo Retegui, Centre-Forward, To Al-Qadsiah, €68.25m– Matteo Ruggeri, Left-Back, To Atlético Madrid, €17m– Roberto Piccoli, Centre-Forward, To Cagliari, €12m– Michel Adopo, Central Midfield, To Cagliari, €3.80mHow have they done? :They have sold last year’s top scorer Mateo Retegui and as of the time of writing have not replaced him. Kossounou will strengthen the defence while Honest Ahanor will replace Ruggeri. Brescianini will provide depth in midfield while Sulemana is clearly being groomed to be the replacement for Ademola Lookman who is likely to leave the club. What remains to be done? :There are two things that need to be dealt with on a priority basis. First is the signing of a new striker to replace Retegui. Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz has been heavily linked over the last week but not signing a striker could have them in a world of trouble. Secondly, they must find a solution to the Lookman issue. It is unlikely that Nigerian ever plays for them again but at the same time, Atalanta don’t want to negotiate, especially with Inter. They are still hoping a club from abroad will come in with a bid.Kaulik Mitra | GIFN
