Ruben Amorim has said his side are perhaps ‘the worst team in the history of Manchester United’ after defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Manchester United lost for the 10th time in the Premier League this season after losing 3-1 to the Seagulls on Sunday.

Kaoru Mitoma teed up Yankuba Minteh for the opener as Brighton took the lead inside five minutes, though Bruno Fernandes levelled for the home side from the penalty spot.

Brighton were well worth the points, however, and retook the lead as Minteh repaid the favour to set up Mitoma for the second. The Japan international turned in from close range after getting to Minteh’s dinked delivery ahead of Noussair Mazraoui.

Brighton wrapped up the win on 76 minutes after a howler from Andre Onana. There appeared little danger as the Cameroonian came to collect a low cross, only for Onana to palm the ball into the path of Georgino Rutter to fire into an open net.

Defeat was a fourth in five home games for Manchester United, who have won just three times in 11 league games since Amorim’s appointment in November. United are 13th in the Premier League table and Amorim has admitted his side are, on current form, perhaps the worst in the club’s illustrious history.

He demanded improvement from both himself and his players as the Red Devils look to turn around a torrid campaign.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change that,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“In ten games in Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach.

“Another loss at home and it’s not acceptable. We can play some football but in small spaces of time, it’s not consistent. We get nervous and suffer a goal and then it’s hard to turn things around.

“We get really anxious and really nervous. You could feel it in the stadium but we can’t end games like that. No matter the result we have to be a different team in all aspects.

“Brighton were comfortable, we tried with not very good football. We lost again at home and that’s not acceptable. We need to change that fast.”
