Ruben Amorim is poised to be without one of his most trusted players for the first leg of Manchester United’s last-16 Europa League tie on Thursday.
The Red Devils make the trip to Spain this week to lock horns with Real Sociedad at Reale Arena, with the European competition now posing as Amorim’s only opportunity to claim silverware following last night’s FA Cup exit.
United and Fulham were unable to be separated after 120 minutes of action, forcing a penalty shootout to decide who advanced to the quarter-finals. When Victor Lindelof’s and Joshua Zirkzee’s spot-kicks were then stopped by Bernd Leno, the side’s exit from the competition was confirmed, meaning they would not retain the trophy for a second successive year.
Before extra-time got underway, Harry Maguire was replaced by January signing Ayden Heaven at the back, having struggled with something of a knock in the closing stages of the clash.

Now, it seems as though Amorim is anticipating the centre-half will be unavailable for the forthcoming fixtures, as he told reporters post-match: “I have to see how Harry Maguire is. It’s a tough moment in that aspect, but we have to move on. We will be a competitive team on Thursday.”
“It’s always hard because you always have the cups when the league is not going in the right direction, but we need to focus on the big goal, which is improving the team, trying to imagine how we are going to improve the team, not just in this moment, in this season, for the next season. So, we have to think not just in the moment but also in the future,” he added when further pressed on Maguire’s potential absence.
