Juventus were forced to dig deep in their own backyard for a 2-2 draw with Parma on Wednesday.
Scorers: McKennie 31′, Weah 49′; Del Prato 3′, Sohm 38′
As the last team in Serie A with an unbeaten record, Juventus would have hoped their clash with 17th-place Parma wouldn’t be too problematic. But the visitors had something special up their sleeves.
Fabio Pecchia’s side arrived at the Allianz Stadium with a clear game plan. Parma lunged forward after about three minutes via captain Enrico Del Prato as the defender jumped above Federico Gatti to open the scoring.
American duo Tim Weah and Weston McKennie then equalised after teaming up for their club. The 24-year-old whipped in a cross from the right and the 26-year-old headed home his first of the season.
Parma didn’t prove down and out, though. Seven minutes later, Simon Sohm restored them the lead. The visitors capitalised on a defensive miscue and had time on their side to calmly pick out the perfect cut-back to beat goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.
Another American intervention was required to pull Juventus level again. This time, the creator turned scorer, as Weah’s acrobatic volley from point-blank range found the net for 2-2.
The final 20 minutes of the clash were end-to-end action as both teams pushed for a late winner. In truth, Parma will feel they should have claimed all three points after missing two big efforts at the death, thanks to top saves from Di Gregorio. Kenan Yildiz then had the last kick of the game cleared off the line.
The result is Juventus’ 16th draw in the 2024 calendar year as they remain unbeaten in Serie A and sit fourth, seven points off the leaders. Parma, meanwhile, move up to 14th.
