Alexander Isak’s arrival at Liverpool feels like a statement of intent. The Swedish striker, fresh from a prolific spell at Newcastle United where he netted 62 goals in 109 appearances, has signed a long-term contract with the Premier League champions. It is a deal that not only strengthens Liverpool’s attack but also signals their ambition to dominate in England and Europe.
Within hours of sealing his transfer, the 25-year-old sat down with LFC for his first interview as a Liverpool player, speaking with pride about joining one of football’s most storied clubs.
“I feel amazing. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it,” Isak said when reflecting on his switch to Anfield.
The forward’s admiration for Liverpool was clear as he described the emotion of wearing the famous red shirt. “It’s mixed emotions, some relief but a lot of pride, happiness. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”
For Isak, the move is about more than prestige. He views Liverpool as the perfect platform to elevate his game. “I think it’s a mixture of what the club is building, but what they’re building on top of what the club already is. The history of the club. Me getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to create history. I want to win trophies. That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well.”
The forward was candid about his motivation. “Yeah, for sure. I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.”
His enthusiasm extends beyond personal accolades. Isak emphasised his desire to immerse himself in Liverpool’s culture and fanbase. “It’s so exciting. I think it’s something difficult to put into words, I think you have to experience it and then explain. I think we all know what Liverpool is about, the fans and what they’re about as well. So, yeah, looking forward to getting to experience that.”
Liverpool’s decision to hand him the iconic No.9 shirt was not lost on him. “It means a lot, it’s an iconic number. Obviously it comes with a responsibility as well but I’m delighted to have this chance and to get this number and I’m just motivated to start working and hopefully giving back as well.”
Isak’s memories of playing against Liverpool at Anfield remain vivid. “Very difficult. I’ve had a little bit of success there but not as a team, I think we lost both games. It’s a very difficult place to come to and to win, which I’ve felt. The atmosphere is something extraordinary. I’m excited to be a part of that.”
He spoke of the challenge of competing against Liverpool’s defence. “Oh, it’s very challenging, of course. We’re talking about some of the best defenders in the world. So, it’s a big challenge. But personally, I love those types of challenges, I love to come up against the best and test myself. I always loved playing against Liverpool and I’m hoping it’s going to be better playing for Liverpool.”
The Swedish striker will join his national team during the international break but hopes to be fit for Liverpool’s return to Premier League action. “Yeah, of course, I think that’s the ambition. However, I’ve had a tricky summer where I haven’t played any games and I’ve had restricted training, so I think that’s one to judge and to analyse where I am at and how much I am ready to give. But I certainly want to play as soon as possible.”
Isak’s targets are simple. “I want to win everything,” he said when asked about his goals.
His final words to supporters encapsulated the excitement surrounding his arrival. “Just that I’m so happy that I’m finally here. I can’t wait to get back out there and hopefully we can share some amazing moments together.”
