Ajax’s director of football Sven Mislintat has revealed the positions that are most likely to receive reinforcements this summer. This week Ajax announced the signing of Branco van den Boomen on a free transfer from Toulouse. The midfielder became the clubs first summer signing, and he certainly won’t be the last.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Mislintat, who joined the club in April, said ‘It’s logical that in the transfer market we don’t just stick to Branco van den Boomen. If you look at the current selection, I think we need a right-footed central defender and striker, for example. If you look purely at the numbers, we don’t have them.’
‘Lorenzo Lucca is leaving, there is no alternative for Jurriën Timber. Each position must be occupied twice, so we are short in numbers. And then it depends on the market who stays. It is clear which players are most attractive to top international clubs. I’m thinking of a trio: Mohammed Kudus, Edson Álvarez and Timber’, the 50-year-old German added.
Mislintat also revealed that Ajax’s transfer budget is ‘excellent’ and that he is ‘very happy’ with the amount of money the club can spend this summer. Ajax finished the season third in the Eredivisie, missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 2009. They’ll have to settle for Europa League football. To challenge for the title next season, Ajax will need to recruit a top-quality striker and an experienced defender.
