Manchester City have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Asensio this summer.
Asensio is entering the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes and there are currently no indications of a desire amongst bosses at Paris Saint-Germain to retain the talents of the 29-year-old forward beyond his current deal.
After leaving Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2023, Asensio has endured a mixed bag of fortune in Paris, joining Aston Villa on loan in January to get regular first-team minutes under his belt and play under his compatriot, Unai Emery.
Aston Villa will not be signing Asensio on a permanent basis for next season, which has thrown the attacker’s future in doubt as we enter the last month of the off-season before Europe’s top five leagues kick off in August.
Asensio starred for Aston Villa and made an instant impact following his arrival to Birmingham, adding a wealth of experience to Emery’s side as they chased a top-five Premier League finish and pushed on in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Recording a quarter-final Champions League finish last term, Villa pipped the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool to bring in a significant chunk of revenue as they enjoyed a commendable European run for a non top-six club.
It remains to be seen what the remainder of the transfer window may have in store for Asensio, who will not be short of suitors particularly as he enters the last 12 months of his current deal at the Parc des Princes.
PSG have built one of the strongest sides ever seen in recent decades and swept all that came before them last season, collecting a stylish treble of trophies and picking up their maiden Champions League title in immaculate fashion, with a 5-0 battering of Inter Milan in the final at the Allianz Arena.
According to the information of Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, super agent Jorge Mendes has been tasked with finding a new destination for Marco Asensio, offering the Spaniard to Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Manchester City.
However, it is claimed that the midfielder’s wage demands are currently proving to be a problem for the Italians, while City have not expressed any interest in a move, despite his PSG expiring in the summer of 2026 and the French club not due to ask for a major fee.
As such, it is believed that Inter are leading the race for the former Aston Villa loanee, and everything will now likely depend on whether the 29-year-old agrees to take a wage cut or not in order to move to the San Siro.
Manchester City don’t have an obvious need for reinforcements in the attacking midfield areas following the signings of Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders, with a cut-price move for Asensio not understood to be on the board’s agenda ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
