History and structure

The Adran Premier League was founded in 2009 as the Welsh Premier Women’s League. It underwent a rebranding in 2021, adopting its current name. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) runs and organises the league.Operating on a round-robin format, teams compete against each other both home and away throughout the season. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the season is crowned the champion. Points are awarded traditionally — three points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss.Promotion and relegation are key features of the league’s structure, with teams moving between the Adran Premier and the Adran North or Adran South leagues. The top teams from these regional leagues — who meet the Premier’s requirements — compete in a playoff to determine who will be promoted. The lowest-ranked team in the Adran Premier faces relegation to their respective regional league.

Teams in the league

As of the latest season, the Adran Premier includes the following teams:

  1. Aberystwyth Town Women (Park Avenue)
  2. Barry Town United Women (Jenner Park)
  3. Cardiff City Women (Cardiff International Sports Stadium)
  4. Cardiff Met WFC (Cardiff Met Cyncoed Campus)
  5. Pontypridd United Women (UWS Sports Park)
  6. Swansea City Ladies (Llandarcy Academy of Sport)
  7. The New Saints FC Women (Park Hall)
  8. Wrexham A.F.C Women (The Rock)

Current champions and record holders

Cardiff City Women are the current champions, having secured the title three times, including consecutive victories in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. Their consistent high-level performance and deep squad strength have made them a dominant force in recent years.Swansea City Ladies and Cardiff Met WFC hold the joint record for the most league titles, each with six championships to their name. While Swansea City have maintained consistent success, Cardiff Met remains a formidable team, despite not winning the title since the 2018/19 season. Swansea’s robust youth academy, experienced coaching staff and well-organised tactical approach make them the biggest current threat to Cardiff City.
