Aberdeen have lifted the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years and, just like in 1990, they did it by beating Celtic on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Hampden Park.

The Hoops were aiming to make history with a record ninth domestic treble, but Aberdeen had other ideas. The Dons turned in a determined, spirited performance to pull off a major upset against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The breakthrough came late in the first half when a Celtic corner took an unfortunate deflection off Alfie Dorrington and ended up in the Aberdeen net.

Brendan Rodgers's side looked to press home their advantage after the break. Arne Engels came close with a powerful effort that smashed off the post, and Greg Taylor sent another effort just over the bar.

But Jimmy Thelin's men hung in there and they got their reward in the 83rd minute. Shayden Morris fired a low cross into the box, and Kasper Schmeichel made a costly mistake, fumbling the ball into his own net to level things up.

Extra time followed, with both sides pushing for a winner. Dante Polvara volleyed over from a great position, while Celtic sub Jeffrey Schlupp rattled the crossbar with a thunderous strike.

Neither side could find a breakthrough, so it all came down to penalties.

That’s when the Aberdeen keeper Dimitar Mitov stepped up and saved from Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston to seal a dramatic victory and deliver the Dons their eighth Scottish Cup.
