The need for Manchester City to sign a midfielder is by now well-known. Rodri’s injury has exposed the holes in the world champions midfield. We have seen a host of midfielders named as potential transfer targets for Pep Guardiola’s side. The latest player to be named as a potential target for Manchester City is Real Madrid midfielder Aurélian Tchouamémi. There is no doubting Tchouamémi’s pedigree but is he the player City needs? That’s a question to ponder going forward.

Pete O’Rourke has reported for Football Insider that Manchester City have set aside funds to move for Aurélian Tchouamémi. Furthermore, O’Rourke also reports that the Real Madrid midfielder is also wanted by Liverpool. It is also reported by O’Rourke that any move from any club for Tchouamémi may have to wait until next summer. O’Rourke adds that it is unlikely that Real Madrid will sell the French international this month.

Aurélian Tchouamémi is a quality player but a Manchester City move for him this month appears unlikely.

There is no doubting the pedigree of Aurélian Tchouamémi as a player. He has shown that during his time at Real Madrid. He does a lot of the midfield grunt work to allow Real Madrid’s attacking talent to shine. The French midfielder has also played at centre-back on occasions for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. While Tchouamémi has the pedigree to play at the highest level, which he has proven, it’s unlikely that Real Madrid would sell him this month. As per O’Rourke’s report, the Real Madrid midfielder may be a summer target for Manchester City or any other interested club in his services. But he may also not be the midfielder that Pep Guardiola’s squad needs right now.

Aurélian Tchouamémi is more of a midfield workhorse than a technician. He is by no means a slouch with the ball but he is more a defensive general in midfield. Is that a player that Manchester City need right now? Potentially yes but for what it would cost to prise Tchouamémi away from Real Madrid you do get the sense that City may be better served looking elsewhere. They need a specific type of a player to bolster their midfield so for now Aurélian Tchouamémi may not the be ideal player for Pep Guardiola’s side.
