It would seemingly only be a matter of time before James McAtee leaves Manchester City. McAtee had an impressive under-21 European Championships as England’s captain. The form he displayed has put him firmly in the sights of a host of clubs across Europe. Two new reports have linked McAtee with a potential move to the Bundesliga or Serie A. Perhaps a move abroad is the best move for McAtee as he bids to further develop as a player.
Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that several Bundesliga clubs have an interest in signing James McAtee. Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen are all credited with an interest in signing James McAtee. Furthermore, Gaughan reports that Manchester City will demand a transfer fee of over £25 million to sell McAtee.
A new report from Susy Campanale for Football Italia indicates that Fiorentina are also interested in signing James McAtee. Campanale reports that Fiorentina are hoping to sign McAtee for under €20 million due to McAtee only having a year to run on his current contract.
Jack Gaughan further reports that Manchester City are eager to include a buy-back clause in any deal to sell James McAtee. The young attacking midfielder is highly regarded at the Etihad. But there isn’t a clear path into the City first team for McAtee. A summer move is the best decision for McAtee’s career and a move abroad may also give him the opportunity he needs to shine.
Playing in the Bundesliga or Serie A could help McAtee progress as a player. A host of young English players have made the move to the Bundesliga to further their development. It is a good league to play regular first-team football and the opportunities are there for young players to hone their craft. Perhaps that is the best career move for McAtee.
It remains to be seen where James McAtee ends up this summer. But with a buy-back clause inserted into any deal to sell the young playmaker he could one day make his mark as a City player.
