The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is the subject of interest from multiple clubs.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Coventry City have been extremely impressive under Frank Lampard and after starting the season in an incredibly poor fashion, they have fought back and are now pushing for the play-offs.
The Sky Blues' impressive home form under the guidance of the former Chelsea and Everton manager has seen them rise up the table, with only Leeds United taking all three points at the CBS Arena since November.
However, there will be a desire to see new stars come through the door in CV6 in the summer, no matter what division they find themselves in.
One player that could get Coventry supporters interested is Callum Wilson, with the Newcastle United striker out of contract in the summer. Leeds and West Ham United are both showing an interest in him, but a return to the club where he made his professional debut could be extremely enticing, with Lampard a huge fan, as per TBR Football.
Wilson started his career with the Sky Blues in 2009, coming off the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Hartlepool United in the first round of the EFL Cup.
16 years later, he has surpassed all expectations, playing consistently in the Premier League while also making appearances in the Champions League and picking up nine caps for England.
However, his time at Newcastle is slowly coming to an end, and promotion to the top flight could allow Lampard to bring in the 32-year-old.
Football League World has asked their Coventry Fan Pundit, Chris Deez, if he believes the Sky Blues have a chance at enticing him to the CBS Arena ahead of next season.
He told FLW: "I think you would be hard-pressed to find a single Coventry fan who doesn't want to see Callum Wilson back here. He is a local lad, born and bred in Coventry. He was a fan favourite while he was here and he was fantastic for us week in, week out.
"Obviously he’s been heavily hampered by injury after injury, the guy can't seem to catch a break, but when he does come back he still looks sharp. He's obviously not a Premier League starting striker anymore but he still does a good job as a backup striker.
"I know that other teams are interested in him, like Leeds, who could undoubtedly offer him more money a week than we can. West Ham as well and he might still want to stick out in the Premier League for a little bit longer. I think he'd do a good job for West Ham, especially with Antonio being out injured long term with his broken leg."
Chris continued: "But, I'd love to see him come back here. A lot of it will come down to the finances. We're not going to be able to pay him anywhere near the probably six figures that he must still be on at Newcastle now.
"He'd get a hero’s welcome because he would obviously immediately be our best striker, even if we managed to keep someone like Haji Wright at the same time.
"I'd absolutely love to see it. I think it will possibly happen, but I'm not 100% sold on us being his next team. I think it's quite likely that we will be his final team and he'll end his career here.
"He may even stick around at the club afterwards and do some coaching. But I think even with his injury problems, he’s got another two to three years left as a top talent."
While there will be a level of excitement at the possibility of bringing a player like Wilson to Coventry, dropping from the top of the Premier League to the Championship will be costly.
His current weekly wage at Newcastle is estimated to be £46,000, as per Capology, and this is money that is unsustainable in the second tier.
His injury record also makes signing him a huge risk, with Wilson struggling this season especially. Alexander Isak's incredible performances have also stopped him from making too much of an impact in the last couple of years and Wilson's time at St. James' Park looks certain to come to an end soon.
However, it seems unlikely that Coventry will be his next destination unless promotion to the Premier League is won.
