Rennes head coach Habib Beye did not hold back in the aftermath of the Bretons’ 2-1 away loss to Toulouse this Saturday. Carles Martinez Novell’s team were winless in their last seven Ligue 1 games, but they inflicted Rennes with a wake-up call. Arnaud Kalimuendo cancelled out Yann Gboho’s opener for the hosts, but Aron Donnum gave Toulouse the lead in the last ten minutes. Rennes remain 11th in the Ligue 1 standings, but Beye was particularly displeased by the behaviour of his players. “I told them I have a dead team, a clinically dead team“, the former Newcastle United defender said in his press conference.
Beye did not shy away from his responsibilities as Rennes conceded another logical defeat, seven days after a chastening 4-1 away loss to Lyon. “What worries me, and I’m primarily responsible for this, is that this team doesn’t resemble what we would like it to be.” Beye also lamented his side’s first half, when Rennes produced “nothing” regarding aggression or personality.
Beye said he was worried about Rennes’ end of the season as the team will host Nice and travel away to Marseille, two teams gunning for Champions League spots. “If we don’t have our right state of mind, we risk experiencing an end of season which will be difficult and which will surely ruin everything we have done until now to put the club back where it should be.”
