With the fixtures now out, the new Premier League season is right around the corner – and some high-profile players look likely to miss the opening matches through injury.
Pre-season is the chance for footballers to regain their fitness after enjoying some time off in the summer, although some will be playing catch up as they continue their recovery from injury.
We’ve gone through each Premier League club’s injury list and picked out seven big stars who are set to miss the start of the campaign through injury.
Manchester City will start their 2023-24 campaign before most Premier League sides as they have the Community Shield to contend with at the beginning of August.
It seems as if this date will come too soon for De Bruyne, who is still recovering from the hamstring tear he sustained in the Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Football Insider report the Belgian international is likely to miss the start of the season, with his return date currently unknown. Amazingly, the 32-year-old had been playing with an injury for two months.
“I’ve been struggling for two months, but it was all small ruptures,” he told reporters after the Champions League final. “Today the hamstring just snapped.”
Still, as good as KDB is, it’s safe to say we probably won’t be laying City in any Premier League title bets.
Since joining Chelsea last summer the French defender hasn’t had much luck with injury. He only managed 10 starts during the last campaign and is now set to miss the start of next season.
The Evening Standard published a report in May that claimed Badiashile will be out for four months with a groin injury. That would see him out until around September which will be a blow to Mauricio Pochettino.
Everything seemed to unravel for Tottenham after Bentancur got injured. Spurs were just two points behind the top four in February but then struggled for form in the absence of the Uruguayan midfielder.
The 26-year-old underwent surgery following an ACL injury sustained against Leicester and could be out until November as he continues his recovery.
After picking up a hamstring injury for France Under-21s at the European Championship, the Crystal Palace star has been ruled out for the start of the season.
Losing Olise will be a significant blow for Roy Hodgson’s side, especially with Wilfried Zaha likely to leave upon his contract expiring. Olise was the creative hub behind Palace last season, producing an impressive 11 assists.
The Brazilian playmaker was stretchered off the pitch against Man City with a serious ankle injury. Pereira has been in recovery since and it is touch and go whether or not he will be back in time for the start of the new season.
The Spanish full-back quickly became a fan favourite at Villa Park after signing from Real Betis in January. He has undergone surgery after sustaining a hamstring injury against Liverpool in Aston Villa’s penultimate game of last season.
According to The Express, the 30-year-old is now facing a battle to be fit for the start of next season as he continues his recovery during pre-season.
Liverpool plan to gently ease Bajcetic back into the action following an injury he picked up in March. While Klopp expects the 18-year-old to take part in pre-season, he won’t be in full training.
“Around the start of the pre-season, there will be parts of reintegration, but it will take time,” Klopp told reporters in May. “He’s not in full training [by then], that’s the prediction at the moment.”
