Arsenal were guaranteed to lose at least one of their internationals from Euro 2024 on Friday, with David Raya’s Spain facing off against Kai Havertz’s Germany in their quarter-final.

There was a pivotal moment for both players in the final 10 minutes of the 90, with Spain 1-0 up.

Starting Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon played a terrible goal kick that led to Havertz receiving possession in a dangerous area. Though he was a long way out, Havertz caught the goalkeeper in no-man’s land, and he attempted a long-range chip to bring Germany level.

Had the shot gone in, Havertz would have simultaneously boosted Germany’s chances whilst also solidifying another error from Simon in the minds of the Spain supporters.

Simon had already made a major mistake earlier in the tournament, gifting a chance to Croatia before being bailed out by a Rodri foul for a penalty – which he then saved. Another high-profile error could have increased calls for David Raya to get a chance in goal.

Instead, the shot flew just over. Germany did later equalise, but Spain won the game in extra time.

Havertz had been withdrawn from the contest by that stage, but he nonetheless becomes the sixth Arsenal player eliminated from the tournament.

Kieran Tierney, Jorginho, Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Leandro Trossard were all knocked out earlier in the tournament.

Raya and Spain will progress to the semi-finals, to face William Saliba and France. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Aaron Ramsdale will learn their fate when England face Switzerland in their quarter-final on Saturday evening.
