Lewis Hall’s loan move to Newcastle has been made into a permanent move, as was guaranteed by the left back reaching whatever mystery clauses were included in the deal a year ago.

Rumours were that the Magpies just had to finish above a certain place in the table, and their decent season clearly did the job. The deal was delayed until today so that it is part of this year’s rolling Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) period. That likely helps both Newcastle in stopping them digging a deeper spending hole, while also meaning Chelsea get to use it as a positive for the next three years rather than the next two.

That was the whole idea behind the loan with an option to buy that was 90% of a guarantee, and now the deal is done. BBC Sport report that the final fee is £28m, with another £7m in add ons possible depending on individual and team achievements during Hall’s time there.

Moving on from a young academy star

“I am extremely proud to be able to build on last season and continue my journey at Newcastle United,” he said on the Newcastle official website.

“When you pull on the black and white shirt, there is no feeling like it and playing in front of the best supporters in the country is extra special for me, being a Toon fan.”

Many Chelsea fans are still gutted that the academy player was let go a year ago, but most have been able to spend this loan year getting over their frustration and move on.

Hall, who was the Blues’ Academy Player of the Year in 2023, looks set for a shining career at the top level as another Cobham product going right to the very top.
