Crazy final phase seen out v Feyenoord

FINALLY! We took a 3-1 win on the fourth matchday of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League against Feyenoord to take three huge points! A truly dramatic end to the encounter ensued with plenty of end-to-end fare, but after Karim Konate's clinical brace, Daouda Guindo sealed the win with a stunning strike!

Match summary

Our boys - with five changes - made a difficult start to the Champions League night at De Kuip. The hosts had a big opportunity in the third minute, but a ball drilled across Blaswich's goalmouth did not meet the intended recipient, to our relief.

After that early scare, we worked hard to gain a foothold in the proceedings and build attacking momentum – without really troubling Timon Wellenreuther in the Feyenoord goal, for now. The chances dried up but there remained plenty of edge to the play in the intimidating Rotterdam atmosphere. The game developed into a hard-fought midfield battle with the stats extremely evenly matched as we headed towards the break - when Oscar Gloukh suddenly delivered a super cross into the penalty area and Karim Konate was placed perfectly to nod in for a 1-0 lead (45+2')!  The Dutch side came into the second half with momentum - as they had in the first, but their good spell proved to be short lived as we upped the ante! Once again we pounced with a cross into the box - this time from a corner.

Bobby Clark's ball in was headed by Piatkowski towards Konate, who turned from close range and slammed in for 2-0 (51'). The 400 Salzburg fans were in full voice in an otherwise silent stadium.

The much-coveted first Champions League points of the season could not be taken for granted as the hosts threw everything forward to try to throw us off balance. Hancko, Nieuwkoop & others peppered the Blaswich target with efforts - but our German goalkeeper didn't have all too much to do.

If it had been a great game so far - but the final phase took the drama to new heights altogether! First Lucas Gourna-Douath was fouled with a stamp that saw Chris-Kévin Nadje have to leave the field with a red card. Would we cruise to the points from there? No way! A minute later the hosts finally got on the scoresheet and the stadium was bouncing. We weren't able to clear the ball well enough and Hadj Moussa smashed in from a tight angle (81').  Things were only getting started in terms of late drama! We raced forward as Capaldo went down in the box - once again VAR was called for, and the referee pointed to the spot - from where Konate smashed his spot kick into the bar. Could the hosts mount an improbable late comeback? Nope, the ball was cut back to Daouda Guindo. The full-back wasted no time in curling the ball into the top corner (86') – and that was that.

Feyenoord still gave everything they had, but the final whistle sounded and the first three points of our UEFA Champions League campaign were in the bag!

Our next UEFA Champions League journey will take us over the border to Germany at the end of November. The best thing about it is that you can be there on our special fan train from Salzburg to Leverkusen. All the info on that can be found here:

We are back in action in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga on Sunday before the international break.

I am very happy for the boys, as that takes a huge weight from our shoulders! We made the stadium a bit quieter with our determination, compactness and aggression off-the-ball. The team played really maturely and until our second goal we were excellent. We need to take this feeling with us now!

You saw today how much of a team we are. Today was the day we really delivered and defended superbly all over the pitch. In the phases when it didn't go well for us, we were really compact and did well - they are three deserved points!
