Reading midfielder Charlie Savage is attracting interest from the likes of Birmingham City, Wrexham and Portsmouth.

According to Football Insider, the 22-year-old has three Championship clubs vying for his signature this transfer window.

Savage signed for Reading in the summer of 2023, and has become a key figure for the side in that time, making 85 appearances in League One in that time.

It’s believed that the Royals value the player at £2 million amid interest from this trio of second division clubs.

When asked about the transfer interest in Savage, FLW’s Reading fan pundit Johnny Hunt claimed that the club are in a strong position to hold out for more money.

He believes that the £2 million asking price isn’t enough, and is hopeful that Savage will remain a key part of the team next season as they eye promotion to the Championship.

“I really hope Charlie doesn’t leave,” Hunt told Football League World.

“We don’t have to sell as in all the financial issues we’ve had under the previous owner.

“The 50 per cent sell-on clause I think Man United have, £2m is nothing, really, in today’s market.

“I would expect him to go for a lot more than that because of his age, he’s an international player, he has potential to get even better.

“But I wouldn’t want to sell him.

“Hopefully he wants to be a part of the project, that he’s still going to be playing regular football at a good level and wants to get us into the Championship next season.

“It’s way too low and we don’t need to sell.

“He’s under contract, we’re not in desperate need for the money, so we’re actually, for the first time in a long time, in a position of strength.

“So, if people want to look for our players they’re going to have to offer a lot of money to even think about.

“I don’t want him to leave, he’s too good for us.

“We want him here, build a team and build for the future.”

Reading finished seventh in the League One table last year under Noel Hunt, missing out on a play-off place by three points.

Savage’s performances were always going to attract interest

Savage was a standout player in League One last year, and was key to Reading becoming a play-off contender.

It’s no surprise that missing out on promotion has led to transfer interest, and all of Wrexham, Birmingham and Portsmouth will be exciting prospects for the player.

While Reading are under new owners, that doesn’t mean they can suddenly afford to walk away from good deals, so there will be a number that could convince them to cash in.

If offers around the £2 million mark come in, it will be an interesting test of the project being built at the club under Rob Couhig.
