As 2024 draws to a close the year was a tale of two halves for Manchester City. Their form during the second half of 2024 has been a shock to the system. As was the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United in May. But after creating history by claiming their fourth consecutive Premier League title, ultimately 2024 can be viewed as another successful year for Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side created history once again in 2024. No club in English football history has won four consecutive league titles. That was until this year. Manchester City willed themselves to yet another historical feat. With Phil Foden and Rodri leading the way the world champions scaled a mountain that had never been scaled before. Although they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United a week after their monumental achievement that doesn’t take the gloss off what Manchester City achieved. They stand alone as the only team to win four consecutive Premier League titles. It is likely a mark that will not be seen again for some time. That is the size of the achievement by Pep Guardiola’s side earlier this year.
But the second half of 2024 has been a grind for Manchester City. What became apparent during the second half of the year was the toll securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title took on City’s squad. Players suddenly appear older, and the effects of climbing the mountain so many times before are clear to see. But that is the nature of football that all eras end eventually.
But for Manchester City, 2024 can only be viewed as a success. It gives way to 2025. 2025 begins with a rebuild of the Manchester City squad on the horizon. That is an exciting proposition to ponder. But as we bid farewell to 2024 it was undoubtedly another successful year for Manchester City.
