There has been a lot of chatter surrounding Rangers in recent days as the summer transfer window starts to take shape and speculation continues to gather pace. While the Ibrox side are still working hard behind the scenes to reshape the squad under new management, attention has been drawn to the potential exit of one of the club’s more valuable assets. These stories always crop up around this time of year and it is never easy to separate truth from rumour, but there are strong indications that this one has legs.
Turkish giants Besiktas are said to have launched a £10M bid for Rangers midfielder Mohamed Diomande. The Ivorian was signed permanently only recently after an initial loan spell from FC Nordsjælland but has clearly made enough of an impression to attract interest from across Europe. Rangers are understood to have turned the bid down as they value the player closer to £15M. That figure is not unrealistic given the modern market and Diomande’s potential ceiling.
According to Ibrox Noise, Rangers fans have had mixed feelings about Diomande’s performances since his arrival, but there is no doubt that clubs on the continent see plenty of upside. Another piece notes that while Diomande has not always shown consistency, his physical qualities and drive from midfield are rare traits that can be built on. These are exactly the sort of elements a side like Besiktas would want as they look to revamp their engine room.
Interestingly, Ibrox Noise had previously warned that Diomande was a bit of a gamble at his original price tag. But with Premier League side Everton now also reportedly monitoring his situation, Rangers could be set for a major profit on the player within months of activating his buy clause.
The fact that Premier League sources are now linking Diomande with a move to England only increases the likelihood of further bids. If Rangers do receive offers in the £15M region, the board will have a tough decision to make. Holding out could bring further gains, but also risks unsettling a player clearly attracting high-level attention.
