Chelsea face Nottingham Forest today knowing that a win puts them in the Champions League, and as ever they’re going to turn to their big game players to try and get the job done in an intense atmosphere at the City Ground.
We all know the names who have stepped up recently – Marc Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez and above all Moises Caicedo have played crucial roles in getting the team back on track after a major wobble in the spring.
Speaking ahead of the game, Enzo Maresca was full of praise for all 3, in particular Caicedo, whose £100m price tag seemed to hold him back early in his Stamford Bridge career.
“For sure [it affected him], 100 per cent, but the price that you pay for a player is not decided by the player. I think Moi is doing fantastic,” the manager said in quotes on the Chelsea official website.
“I think also Enzo [Fernandez] is doing fantastic, I think [Marc] Cucurella is doing fantastic, all players that I think a long time ago there was noise around them. But now, because the performance is very good, no-one is thinking about how much money we paid for them.
“The most important thing is that I can feel the players are aware this is the game. They are aware of where we are going, they are aware of the environment that we are going to find. At the end we will be all there and we will see how we finish.”
Enzo and Cucurella have scored crucial goals in recent games, but it’s Caicedo who holds the whole thing together. With a start today, he will become the first Chelsea player to start every game in a league season since Cesar Azpilicueta in 2018/19 under Maurizio Sarri.
