There are a number of strikers Chelsea are regularly linked with, including the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen. One name which came up a lot last summer was Samu Aghehowa, but after he ended up moving to Porto instead, things went very quiet.

While Chelsea have looked elsewhere, including quite serious recent links to Benjamin Sesko and Liam Delap, the links to Aghehowa just won’t go away, mainly thanks to his impressive form in the Portuguese league.

Last weekend he smashed in a penalty which takes him to 20 goals (that was his first spot kick, even more impressively) from 26 starts in all competitions. That prompted Portuguese paper A Bola to do a little feature on his development and his future.

They claim that Aston Villa, West Ham, Arsenal… and Chelsea, are all watching him closely as he develops under the newly appointed Martin Anselmi in the north of Portugal.

It’s interesting to hear that the Spain youth international is still adapting his game to play the way the new coach wants – with lots of pressing and dropping deep to collect the ball. That’s pretty similar to how we would want a Nicolas Jackson alternative to play, so our scouts will likely be delighted to see Samu getting a test run in a similar role.

Everything lines up – except the price tag

The collapse of his move to Stamford Bridge last summer did seem to be a little tainted with bad blood – but in the end, money talks, and he’s hardly going to turn down the chance to move to Stamford Bridge if the money is right.

At just 20 years old, he fits our model age-wise, but perhaps not price-tag wise – Porto are said to be looking at his €100m release clause as sufficient to put off any interest this coming summer, even from the big dogs of the Premier League.
