Saturday 2 November 1-3pm Southside walk (Queen’s Park area)

This tells the story of Celtic in the Southside of Glasgow , looking at famous and often tragic events from the club’s past. It will visit many obvious footballing sites – such as Hampden – but also many less well-known places that have shaped Celtic. And best of all, attending will still leave plenty of time afterwards to go to the pub before kick-off!

Celtic in the Southside

Saturday 2 November 2024, 1pm-3pm (Celtc v Aberdeen semi-final day). Spaces available (send Matthew Marr a message to book a place). Tour time – c. two hours. Tour distance – three miles. Tour summary – A mainly flat walk on pavements. There is one steep hill and some walking on grass. Tour cost – It’s FREE OF CHARGE.

Although Celtic’s home is in the East End of Glasgow, some of the club’s greatest days have come in the city’s Southside. The most obvious is Hampden Park. Not only the location of many cup victories, including Scottish Cups and League Cups, this has also been Celtic’s home venue on different occasions.

However there are many other places too, including the second Hampden Park (now called Cathkin Park). This was where Celtic first beat Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final, amongst other events. It was also where Hibs won the 1887 Scottish Cup, a crucial event in Celtic’s foundation.

Just a bit further north is the original Cathkin Park. This witnessed Celtic’s first away loss, but saw happier moments too, especially the 1902 British League Cup victory over Rangers.

The tour considers sadder days too. The old Victoria Infirmary (now flats) was where John Thomson died in 1931 after a tragic on-field accident at Ibrox.
