As Paris Saint-Germain prepare to face Inter Milan in Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final, some Marseille fans have been making headlines of their own – by flocking to local sports shops to buy Inter shirts in anticipation of what many see as a symbolic showdown. But not everyone is impressed.

Former Marseille manager Rolland Courbis, and current RMC Sport pundit, didn’t hold back in criticising those supporters during an appearance on BFMTV.Spending money to buy the shirt of the team that’s facing PSG? You really must have a lot of money and not much to do with your life,” he said bluntly.

According to local shopkeepers in Marseille, the rush on Inter merchandise has been unprecedented. One employee at Sport 2000 told BFMTV. “All year long, no one asks for Inter Milan shirts. Now it’s like everyone has suddenly become a Nerazzurri fan. It’s madness.”

Courbis, for his part, sought to reframe the OM-PSG rivalry. “When I coached Marseille, PSG were a rival, not an enemy. That doesn’t mean I suddenly have a Parisian accent,” he added, responding to the recent uptick in tribal anti-PSG sentiment ahead of the final.

The debate over whether Marseille fans should support Inter – or even whether they should care – has dominated French football talk shows this week. Some, like DJ Snake, have expressed understanding for the anti-Paris stance. Others, such as Basile Boli, have controversially shown support for PSG, prompting backlash from former OM players like Éric Di Meco. Courbis, however, was keen to keep things in perspective.

“Honestly, I’ve got better things to do than stress about whether PSG might beat Inter Milan,” he said. “I had two Italian grandmothers – doesn’t mean I support Inter.”GFFN | George Boxall
