Manchester City return to Premier League action this weekend when they take on Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The world champions will be hoping to end their four-game losing run in all competitions against Spurs. A win could set the tone for what is to come for Pep Guardiola’s side after the most recent international break. But while there is still plenty of the 24/25 season to come, in the background Manchester City’s squad rebuild is looming in the background. With that in mind yet another premier young talent has been mentioned as a potential target for Manchester City.
Steve Kay has reported for Football Transfers that RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba has caught Manchester City’s eye. Kay further reports that the world champions are exploring a move for the French international. Lukeba has shone for RB Leipzig so far this season. The defender arrived at RB Leipzig from Lyon as a replacement for Josko Gvardiol who signed for Manchester City. Furthermore, Kay reports that any potential City move for Lukeba wouldn’t come cheap. As per Kay’s report, there is a €90 million release clause in Lukeba’s current contract for 2025. That release clause drops to €65 million in 2026 as per Kay’s report. Lastly, Kay adds that Chelsea and Real Madrid also have an interest in signing the talented young defender.
A look at Castello Lukeba as a player shows that he does fit the profile required for a Manchester City defender. He is more than adept in possession. His ability to read the game stands out as does his defensive acumen. Lukeba is also strong in a challenge so he looks to be the complete package for a young defender. His skill, coupled with his age, does give the impression that he could potentially be a player for Manchester City to one day build their defence around. The 21-year-old French international does look to be one of the brightest young defensive prospects in European football. Watching him play it is easy to see why the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea are reportedly monitoring his progress.
To see Manchester City linked with a player like Castello Lukeba isn’t a major surprise. It is becoming clear that a rebuild of sorts is coming to Manchester City’s defence. Players such as Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake and John Stones are showing signs of slowing down. In the case of Walker, it’s age that looks to be catching up to City’s captain. Stones and Ake have been plagued by nagging injuries in recent times so that does give the impression that City may look to replace one of them next summer. The case of Kyle Walker is separate from that of Stones and Ake. But if Manchester City did decide to let one of Stones or Ake leave next summer, it wouldn’t be a major surprise to see them move for a player like Castello Lukeba.
Castello Lukeba does fit the profile necessary to play in Pep Guardiola’s defence. His game does look well suited to life as the world champions. With his obvious talent and potential the French international could one day become one of the premier defenders in European football. If Manchester City do decide to start the rebuild of their defence next summer I wouldn’t be surprised to see them move for a player like Lukeba. How he performs for RB Leipzig for the remainder of the season is something to watch for. If he continues his impressive form City’s reported interest could materialise into something more substantial next summer.
