Brighton fans welcomed Yankuba Minteh to the south coast at the end of last month.
The young winger sold without ever appearing for Newcastle United, after his £7m transfer from Odense in summer 2023.
A year on loan at Feyenoord followed by that end of June 2024 sale to Brighton.
Newcastle United fans wondering what might have been, as Yankuba Minteh sold for £33m, to help the club stay within PSR restrictions, with 30 June 2024 the deadline for the end of that latest three-season accounting period.
Elliot Anderson also exiting for the same reason, the lifelong Newcastle United fan sold to Nottingham Forest for £35m. With Newcastle having to fill a short-term £50m PSR shortfall, the sales of Anderson and Minteh more than covering that.
The interesting (worrying…) thing for Newcastle United fans, how these two young players will end up doing now they won’t be developing at St James’ Park.
Last night was a blow for Elliot Anderson, the former NUFC player forced off with a 43rd minute injury during a 2-0 Forest win over Millwall, Anderson needing to be helped off the pitch.
Today (Tuesday 24 July) has seen Yankuba Minteh make his friendly debut for Brighton, the match in Tokyo (NUFC heading to Japan themselves for two friendlies – details below) against Kashmira Antlers (an 11am kick-off in UK time).
Brighton fans reacting very positively after seeing the now former Newcastle United winger scoring after only 15 minutes, such a sweet finish from Yankuba Minteh.
Only time will tell just how much of a loss, or not, the departures of Yankuba Minteh and/or Elliot Anderson prove to be.
The Newcastle United hierarchy had let the situation go right to the wire in terms of PSR, so a sale or sales had to be made, NUFC fans only thankful it wasn’t a Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak.
However, the club surely has to now better position itself, so we no longer see young promising players having to be sold at the last minute…
