Major League Soccer released an overview of the roster profiles for all 32 clubs this past week; it doesn't look great for Toronto FC.

Player recruitment at Toronto FC has been a main talking point among many people for why the club is in its position. Overpayments, poor scouting, and little investment into youth have resulted in Toronto FC sitting near the bottom of the entire MLS.

MLS's club roster profile update for May 2025 shows just how bleak player recruitment at Toronto FC has been and also what it might mean for the summer transfer window.

Sitting on zero general allocation money is pretty brutal to look at, considering you hope any team going "all in" and using up their GAM would be higher up the standings. Misery does love company, though, as the LA Galaxy, who have yet to win a game this season, also have $0 GAM.

Toronto FC is also only utilizing one of their U22 initiative player slots, which is being used on Cassius Mailula, who is out on loan with Wydad AC in Morocco until August. Extremely impactful players like Pedro Vite of Vancouver and Diego Luna of Real Salt Lake are examples of players on the U22 initiative contract. Yet, Toronto FC's current roster is constructed without a single player on that sort of contract.

That leads us to an overview of the designed players. Three years ago, Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi sounded like massive coups for Toronto FC, but as we know now, neither has lit up Major League Soccer. In fairness, to Bernardeschi he's at least looked like a DP-level player for decent stretches of his time in Toronto, although the same can't really be said for Insigne.

Between being hurt, terrible body language on the pitch and just not putting up the goal contributions needed for someone on his salary, Insigne's situation will be interesting to follow.

Insigne is one of the few players in Major League Soccer whose contract expires mid-season in the summer. The Italian is set to become a free agent in June 2026. Given all that has happened, it feels doubtful that Insigne will be considered for any extension with the club.

Sticking to the topic of designated players, that third and final spot is also still open. The club can opt to stick with its current model, which is to operate with two DPs and four U22 spots. However, considering they did not add any new U22 players to take up a spot, it begs the question of what Toronto is doing this summer.
