Gary O'Neil's future is up in the air amid speculation over Rob Edwards' future at Luton Town

Paul Robinson has predicted a decision will be made over Gary O’Neil’s future at Wolves next week amid speculation surrounding Luton Town’s Rob Edwards.

It has previously been reported by TBR Football that Edwards is in the frame to replace O’Neil, should he be sacked by Wolves.

Edwards oversaw the Hatters’ promotion to the Premier League, and led them to 18th in the table in their single campaign back in the top flight, finishing above most peoples’ expectations.

Wolves are without a win in their opening 10 league games, putting O’Neil under pressure to deliver results soon.

The Premier League side face Southampton this weekend prior to the international break, which could be a huge clash in determining the manager’s future.

Robinson believes that the upcoming international break could be an opportunity for Wolves to make a change in the dugout.

He has claimed that next week will be huge for deciding his future, and that a loss to the Saints could result in O’Neil losing his job.

“We’re in that kind of territory, aren’t we,” said Robinson, via Football Insider.

“You know, without a win this far on into the season, it’s looking more and more difficult for Wolves.

“This is a continuation of the way that they finished at the end of last season.

“Any manager that’s gone this long without a decent run of results, it’s unlikely that they’re still in the job, owners will panic, and owners will press the button because of Premier League security and Premier League safety.

“[It’s a] huge game for them this weekend against Southampton, he’s under a lot of pressure.

“The snap rock bottom without a win, with only a draw to the name, they’re really struggling, in many international breaks do we see managers change.

“Actually, the big thing around Wolves is do they give Gary O’Neill those three games after the Southampton game to give them an opportunity of turning it around.

“Or do they say a poor result, a poor performance against Southampton, we changed the manager in the international break and we give a new manager a hit at three very winnable games.

“You’ll certainly get answers in the next week.”

Rob Edwards’ Luton Town stint

Edwards took charge of Luton following Nathan Jones’ move to Southampton in November 2022.

The 41-year-old has earned a lot of praise for his work at Kenilworth Road, even if the club was unable to survive once back in the Premier League.

He has so far overseen 91 games in charge of the Hatters, with his side winning 29 times and losing 38.

Luton currently sit 19th in the Championship table, having struggled to put together positive form since returning to the second division.

Poor start to the new season shouldn’t overshadow Edwards’ work at Luton

Edwards has been a great appointment for Luton, and it was inevitable that he would be linked with a Premier League return at some point this season.

While the team has made a poor start to this year, that shouldn’t go too against him given the body of work he’s built up at Kenilworth Road already.

The Hatters almost survived in the Premier League against the odds, and pulled off some excellent results against teams with much larger resources.
