Don Goodman believes only Mateus Fernandes and Aaron Ramsdale have been Southampton's good signings this season.

Southampton has endured many disappointing defeats this season, but none as painful as the recent loss to Wolves. A result like this stings even more, given the high hopes leading into the match.

Like it or not, this crucial win gave Wolves a measure of revenge for their 2020/21 FA Cup elimination.

These are the kind of decisive games that fuel rivalries, and with Matt Doherty’s latest comments, it certainly feels like this fixture is heading in that direction.

As if the post-match drama wasn’t enough, Southampton fans now have another jab to deal with, this time from former Wolves hero Don Goodman.

Speaking to Football League World, the pundit didn’t hold back in his criticism of Southampton’s transfer strategy. But in an unexpected twist, he went a step further, branding almost all their signings as flops—except for two.

Goodman aids Southampton fans realizing major transfer flaw

In his words: "In the summer and January window, Southampton recruited 22 players, and when you look at it, it is only really Mateus Fernandes and arguably Aaron Ramsdale that have been anywhere near a success."

Now, you might be tempted to dismiss Goodman’s remarks due to his Wolves connection, but deep down, it’s hard to argue against him.

After all, how can one defend Southampton’s scattergun approach in the transfer market this season? Just look at the names—Cameron Archer, Flynn Downes, Yukinari Sugawara. These were meant to be marquee signings, yet they have failed to deliver anything beyond occasional flashes of brilliance.

Southampton’s struggles this season have been as much about inconsistency on the pitch as they have been about missteps off it. And if Goodman’s words sting, it’s only because they hit uncomfortably close to the truth.

But at this point, dwelling on past mistakes won’t change anything. Instead of lamenting another failed recruitment drive, shouldn’t the focus be on the future, now that Johannes Spors is to lead the charge?
