Paris Saint-Germain had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash.
PSG dominated much of the first half, outshooting Liverpool 12-1, but couldn’t break through. Luis Enrique’s side thought they had taken the lead when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled a shot into the top-left corner, only for VAR to rule him offside by the narrowest of margins.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker played a crucial role in keeping PSG off the scoresheet, making four first-half saves and adding five more after the break. Despite PSG’s relentless pressure, it was Liverpool that found the decisive goal late.
In the 87th minute, Alisson launched a long ball to Darwin Nunez, who won a duel and set up substitute Harvey Elliott. The young midfielder stayed composed and slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving Liverpool the edge heading into the second leg.
After the match, PSG defender Willian Pacho was one of the players who kept Liverpool’s attack quiet until late in the second half. The Ecuadorian noted that it was a challenging result to take, but he remains positive heading into the second leg.
“It’s very difficult [on Wednesday night],” Pacho said (h/t Made In Foot). “The truth is, we did a lot to deserve the victory. But, well, that’s football—things don’t always go our way. But now, we have to pick ourselves up.
“We played an excellent match; we know what we are capable of. So I have confidence in my team, in who we are, and I know that if we do things right, we will get a good result there. We must always stay positive.
“When you see the team’s desire to push forward, not back down, to always want more… That’s what helps us and inspires us to keep growing as a team, as players. I am convinced that we will win the match there.”
