Birmingham City are back in action on Saturday against Peterborough United as they look to make it six wins on the bounce.

The level of investment at St. Andrew’s is well-known and Chris Davies’ side are now expected to not just win promotion but to also claim the title.

And, they’ve started to justify that hype, with Blues having won every game since their opening day draw at home to Reading.

Alfie May should start for Birmingham City against Peterborough

Many feel Blues have continued to improve as the season has progressed, with their best performances coming in victories against Wrexham and Rotherham, two clubs expected to be in the mix for promotion come May.

So, it would be no surprise if Davies kept faith with the same XI that did so well against the Millers last time out.

However, speaking to FLW, fan pundit Mike explained that one change may benefit Birmingham against the Posh, as Alfie May could be better suited to the opposition, instead of Lyndon Dykes, who excelled against Rotherham.

He said: “The only change for me would be May in for Dykes. I think Dykes was great on Saturday, but Rotherham are a much more physical side than Peterborough.

Peterborough will try to play out from the back, so May will cause problems with his pressing, his intensity, his clever runs. So I’d put him alongside Jay Stansfield.

I think we will get chances from the press, and he’s a great goalscorer.”

Alfie May and Lyndon Dykes will be rotated this season

Given his talent, Stansfield is always going to play, so the reality is that Davies has a straight choice between Dykes and May to partner him when they’re both fit.

There are ways to fit all three in the team, but most would agree that the balance of the side is better suited to having natural wingers involved.

So, Davies will have a big decision to make, and he proved last week by opting for Dykes over May that he is prepared to drop players.

Of course, it’s an incredible position to be in, as both are brilliant strikers at this level, and it’s not a real problem who starts.

It seems Dykes was chosen at the New York Stadium due to the physicality of Rotherham, and Mike makes a fair point that May could be the right option against Peterborough.

It will be a very different game, and Blues may have more joy at building up play, whilst the pressing from the front is another factor that the boss will consider.

Ultimately, it’s a great position to be in, and you can be sure that both will feature at some point, and it’s then down to whoever starts to show why they should keep the shirt moving forward.

There are other selection dilemmas across the pitch, as Davies has a squad that essentially has two good players for each position, and it will be his job to manage the situation and to ensure players remain motivated and pulling in the same direction.
