Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an explanation for his decision not to afford any playing time to Rodrygo, in the club’s latest outing.
Real Madrid are of course fresh off an evening to forget on Wednesday.
After making the trip to New Jersey for a showdown with Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, Los Blancos were ultimately condemned to the wrong side of a 4-0 result.
As much means signals the end of the Spanish heavyweights’ campaign at the newly-formatted Club World Cup.
Despite his side’s struggles over the course of the 90 minutes, one member of Real’s ranks glued to the bench for the game’s entirety on Wednesday was the aforementioned Rodrygo.
Amid ongoing speculation surrounding the future of the Brazilian, it therefore came as little surprise when his name was put to boss Xabi Alonso during his post-match press conference.
And the Spanish tactician did not hesitate in confirming:
“I didn’t play Rodrygo as a technical decision. We thought we would be better off with other players. It’s not about his future.”
